Senior Lecturer in Comparative Politics, Department of Government, London School of Economics and Political Science. His publications include the book »Money Unmade: Barter and the Fate of Russian Capitalism» (Cornell University Press, 1999). In 2004 he received Franklin L. Burdette/Pi Sigma Alpha Award for the best paper presented at the 2003 Annual Conference of the American Political Science Association, for “Boom, Gloom, Doom”. More details here.

Senior Research Fellow in Oxford University since 2012, Professor of History of Eastern Europe and China (19th and 20th century), European University Institute, Florence (from 2008). Prof. Smith is currently working on a book that compares the efforts of Communist regimes in the Soviet Union (1917-1941) and the People’s Republic of China (1949-1976) to eliminate ‘superstition’ from daily life. He is the editor, together with Lyndal Roper, of the journal, Past and Present. His recent publications are Revolution and the People in Russia and China: A Comparative History ( 2008), The Religion of Fools?
